ALBERTOSAURUS | CRETACEOUS ALASKA

Artist James Havens presents a stunning piece titled “Albertosaurus, Cretaceous Alaska,” part of the No. 1 Alaskan Natural History Series, created circa August 3, 2010, in Anchorage, Alaska. This captivating oil on canvas artwork measures 4.5ft by 7ft.

In this scene, the sun gently rises as a herd of Anchiceratops cautiously crosses a river during their annual migration to the birthing grounds farther north. Meanwhile, a stealthy Albertosaurus silently stalks the opposite shore, awaiting the ambush to come in the landscapes of what is now Alaska, 70 million years ago.

The formidable Albertosaurus, featured in James Havens's artwork, could reach up to 10 feet tall and 15 to 17 feet long, distinguishing it as a smaller relative of the infamous T. rex. Fossils of Albertosaurus discovered in Alaska include isolated teeth and the rare bones of a smaller adult or juvenile.

This painting also highlights the Anchiceratops, which stood about seven feet high and spanned 16 to 20 feet in length, weighing up to four tons; fossil discoveries of Anchiceratops in Alaska include a back end of a skull. The depicted flora showcases “living fossils” such as Ginkgo, Magnolia, Sequoia, Dawn Redwood, Horsetails, and Ferns.
