Artist James Havens presents a remarkable piece as part of the No. 2 Alaskan Aviation History Series, created circa March 15th, 2007, in Anchorage, Alaska. This stunning oil on canvas measures 3ft X 7ft and is proudly displayed in the permanent collection of The Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum.
Merrill Field, established in 1930 just one mile east of downtown Anchorage on 436 acres, is recognized as the first significant airport in Anchorage. Named after Russell Hyde Merrill, an early Alaskan aviation pioneer, the airport commemorates his legacy after he disappeared in September 1929 during a flight to Bethel. Notably, the first aviation beacon in the Territory of Alaska was situated at Merrill Field, dedicated on September 25, 1932, in honor of Russ Merrill.
A highlight of Alaska aviation history is the 1931 American Pilgrim 100B NC709Y. This iconic aircraft arrived in Alaska with Alaska Air Express, later passed through ownership by Star Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and ultimately the Ball Brothers Fish Company. Today, NC709Y stands as the last remaining Pilgrim and is listed on the US National Register of Historic Objects.
