PACHYRHINOSAURUS PEROTORUM

Artist James Havens presents his latest creation in the No. 3 ALASKAN NATURAL HISTORY SERIES, featuring a stunning oil on canvas piece measuring 12ft X 11.5ft, completed around November 2012 in Anchorage, Alaska.

This artwork highlights Alaska’s Very Own Horned Dinosaur, Pachyrhinosaurus perotorum, a newly identified species of Ceratopsian discovered in the Prince Creek formation on the North Slope of Alaska. The piece is based on two bone fragments from the dinosaur’s frill and a partial skull, which is distinctly unique to Alaska. This herbivorous dinosaur roamed the earth approximately 70 million years ago, and the skull, measuring about three meters in height, is now on permanent display at the Perot Museum of Science and Nature in Dallas, Texas. Pachyrhinosaurus perotorum is the third named species within its genus, recognized for possessing massive flattened bosses instead of typical horns on the nose and above the eyes. It features a distinctive pair of horns at the top edge of the parietal cavities and a narrow dome at the back of the nasal boss. Also included in this artwork is the recently discovered bird species, Gruipeda vegrandiunis, aptly named “tiny one,” which left small tracks in what is now Denali Park, Alaska. Dr. Anthony Fiorillo of the Perot Museum of Science & Nature collaborated on this project to guarantee the accuracy of the representation.

The piece is available in limited editions: 75 museum-quality “Artist Hand Embellished” canvas prints, sized 6ft across, priced at $2,750 (special order only); 100 canvas prints at 4ft across for $1,750 (special order only); and a 2000 archival paper edition, sized 13.5" X 11.5", priced at $125.
