The Denali Pterosaur is the very first sculpture ever created by James Havens, showcasing his unique contribution to Alaska paleontology. Titled “Denali Pterosaur, Cretaceous Alaska,” this pterosaur sculpture depicts the creature that left a hand impression uncovered in Denali National Park in July 2009. This remarkable discovery marked the first confirmed documentation of pterosaurs this far north, making it a significant milestone in Alaskan paleontology.
The sculpture serves as a 3D representation of James Havens' original oil painting of the same name, ‘Denali Pterosaur.’ This epic project embraced a “go big or go home” theme, with James receiving invaluable assistance from Mr. Shawn Thompson, who generously volunteered his time and welding skills to help bring the sculpture to life. Built in five separate pieces for ease of transport, the sculpture was later reassembled on-site. Once displayed in a flying position, this stunning sculpture weighs one thousand seven hundred and fifty pounds and has become a popular attraction at its permanent home in the Alaska Museum of Science and Nature.

The original oil painting, Denali Pterosaur by James Havens was used as the basis fo the sculpture.
